There are many pros and cons of using Film Cameras. We love film cameras very much. We stand by the quality and beauty these cameras bring to many photographers. People who started their journey of photography and who are very serious taking photos use film cameras. However, sometimes their level of expertise doesn’t give them the full potential user experience. What’s their alternative option? Digital Single-Lens Reflex Camera, “DSLR.”

Just because we review most of the film cameras on our website does not mean we do not like DSLR cameras. Vice versa, we are not saying that one is better than the other. Indeed the film cameras and digital cameras are different, but they both have one purpose – that is to give the photographer the best photography experience at the right moment.

Having said above, what we want to do is to provide you some information about digital cameras for you to make your decision to buy your next camera.  We will discuss the quality of digital photos and the reliability of the digital cameras. There are many types of digital cameras so let’s dive right into it.

First, let’s look at the quality of digital photos. They can display at very high resolutions. However, that does not mean that it is better than the traditional film photographs. In the past, the digital photos came out blurry. Many printer manufacturers did not have quality papers paper to print these high-resolution photos. No matter how good the digital photo resolution may be, some photo enthusiasts liked the film photographs. Like I mentioned earlier, some photographers prefer that film photos than the digitized images.

Second, let’s discuss how the digital camera stores the photos. Many digital cameras back then had low memory storage, and the LCD screen on the camera was small, some amateur photographers couldn’t capture beautiful images with these cameras. Now, the digital camera storage can expand with microSD cards. Another good thing about having the expandable storage in the digital camera is that you can take as many photos you want and store them on your computer.  Most modern digital camera’s LCD screens are much larger than the previous generation ones. Film cameras keep the photos in roll film, which does not have expandable storage and cannot keep the images in your computer.

Third, let’s review the reliability of digital cameras. Most digital cameras require no major “maintenance” other than cleaning your lenses and replacing batteries time to time. However, digital cameras can have some internal software issues. If the sensor is broke or functions do not work, it’s tough to fix the problem because these are digital equipment. Fixing any more component on these cameras will break your bank which leads to my final topic, the cost.

Lastly, let’s not forget about the cost. I must say the digital cameras are much more expensive than film cameras. You may spend hundreds of dollars, or even thousands of dollars depend on the brand and model you select. Also, you may want to keep the different interchangeable lenses for various shooting. These lenses can cost you a lot. Some editing software is expensive as well. Unless you are professional photographers, any average person would not want to spend hundreds of dollars on software alone.

Digital cameras have great benefits. Most photographers wish and use these cameras daily. We hope that we helped you to see some of the differences between the digital vs. film cameras and you can pick the one that is right for you. Again, the main purpose is to take great shots whether the camera is digital or film. We simply want you to have the best photography experience.

Pros:

  • Quality. You can take high-resolution photos from a click of a button.
  • Printing. You can print them in various sizes without any editing.
  • Storage. You have options to buy bigger micro-SD card to keep all your photos, and you can store them on your computer.

Cons:

  • Expensive. The digital cameras are very expensive. Lenses and software can add up as well.
  • Complexity. Unless you know every feature on the camera, you will need to play around with the camera to understand what each button does to make great photos.
  • Maintenance. These cameras are like a little computer for photographers. You have to take care of them like any electronic devices.
